About the Reading Time Calculator
The Reading Time Calculator helps writers, bloggers, and students estimate how long it takes to read a piece of text. Whether you’re managing blog posts, academic papers, eBooks, or marketing content, this tool ensures your readers know exactly how much time they’ll spend reading. It’s ideal for content creators, teachers, and publishers who want to make articles more accessible. Platforms like Medium and WordPress use similar systems to show estimated read time—and now, you can too.
How the Read Time Calculator Works
The formula for the reading time calculation is simple yet effective:
Reading Time = (Total Words ÷ Average Reading Speed)
For example, if your article has 1,000 words and the average reading speed is 225 words per minute, the read time calculator determines: 1,000 ÷ 225 = 4.44 minutes, which is about 4 minutes and 26 seconds. This tool performs the calculation automatically for you.
Examples of Estimated Reading Times

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. How does this reading time calculator work?
It counts the total number of words in your text and divides it by the average reading speed (in words per minute) that you set. The result is then converted into minutes and seconds.
Q2. How does Medium calculate read time?
Medium calculates reading time based on an average reading speed of 265 words per minute. They also add 12 seconds for each image included in the article. Our tool focuses on text, but you can adjust the WPM to get a similar estimate.
Q3. How does Kindle calculate reading time?
Kindle's "Time to Read" feature is more personalized. It learns your specific reading speed over time by tracking how long it takes you to read pages and then uses that data to predict how long it will take you to finish a chapter or the entire book.
Q4. How does Wattpad calculate reading time?
Like Medium, Wattpad uses a standard words-per-minute model (around 250-300 wpm) to provide an estimated reading time for each story part, helping readers choose stories that fit their available time.
Q5. Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Your privacy is paramount. All calculations are processed securely through our protected API proxy, and your text is never stored or shared.
